Tips for Using Ride with GPS
Navigate Using the Map
When you’re ready to begin your ride, make sure the ride guide is open in the Ride with GPS app. Also, make sure your location is turned on so the map can determine where you are. Then click the orange “Navigate” button in the bottom left corner of the screen. If you are not at the starting point of the route, you can choose to have the app navigate you to the start by click the “Route to Start” option.
Once you begin your ride, turn-by-turn navigation instructions will appear both on the screen and auditorily. You can turn off your screen if you wish to navigate entirely by sound. Alternatively, you can turn down the volume and navigate just by the visual cues provided at the top of the screen.
When you are approaching a point of interest, the app will notify you to “take notice.” This is a good time to stop your bike and read the information provided in the points of interest.
.
If you are navigating auditorily, there are two alerts you may hear. If you hear a dreadful two-note sequence (da-duh), then you have traveled off-route. The app will sense when you are back on course again and provide you with a cheery sounding four-note signal (da-da-da-dah!), which indicates that you are once again on-route. Note that if you walk too far from the route (for example, going inside to a restaurant), the app may sound the two notes (da-duh) telling you that you are off course. If you are purposely away from the route, these signals can get annoying, and you may wish to turn down your volume. Just make sure to dial your volume up again when you are ready to resume your ride.
View Points of Interest
When you are approaching a point of interest, the app will notify you to “take notice.” When you hear this, stop your bike, look at the map in the Ride with GPS app, and click the appropriate icon to learn about the point of interest. Here you will read a short write-up describing the point of interest. Sometimes other information is provided as well, such as photos or links to videos, news articles, or other online information.
Save the Ride Guide for Later Use
When you send the ride guide to the Ride with GPS app on your phone, you are given the option to save the guide. If you have just downloaded the ride guide and you are riding the route immediately, there is no not need to save the route since the route is open in your app. However, if your app is accidentally closed, the route will disappear.
You may wish to save the route to your phone either for later use or to ensure the route doesn’t disappear if you accidentally close the app while navigating. After you’ve sent the map to your device, click the “Save” button at the bottom of the ride guide and then select “Download for Offline.” Not only does this save the route to your app, but it also allows you to use and navigate the ride guide without a WiFi or cellular connection.
While you can save a ride guide in your app, it is recommended that you download a fresh guide right before you head out on your ride as the ride guides are frequently updated to reflect changes.
Open a Saved Ride Guide
To open a ride guide you previously saved, open the Ride with GPS app, and click the “Library” icon in the menu at the bottom of the screen. Then select the “Routes” menu tab at the top of the screen to see the ride guide(s) you previously downloaded. Click on the name of the ride guide to begin navigating.
End a Ride
When you have finished your ride, you need to let the Ride with GPS app know you have finished, otherwise it will keep navigating as you go about your day. If you follow the route all the way to the end, the app may automatically determine you have finished the ride and ask you if you wish to save the ride. If you are not prompted to end your ride, hold your finger on the orange pause button at the bottom of the screen until you are given the option to “Finish Ride.” You can then choose to save the ride, if you’d like, or delete the ride.
Troubleshoot
If you are experiencing other problems while using the app, consider doing a Google search to troubleshoot.
