About the Ride

Bellingham is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples. For countless generations, the lands and waters have been cared for by the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe. Today, ecosystems are under strain, and communities continue to reckon with the legacy of colonization, exclusion, and injustice. Centering Indigenous voices, honoring traditional knowledge, and restoring our relationship with the Earth offer pathways toward healing. Darrell Hillaire (Tse-sum-ten), member of the Lummi Nation and founder of Setting Sun Circle, said that “Indigenous teachings offer a way forward — not just for Native people but for all people.” The Bellingham community has embraced art as a way of honoring Coast Salish cultures and expressing gratitude for the enduring stewardship of the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe. Salish Tribute guides cyclists to view this Indigenous art.

The route begins at Waypoint Park. Just a few blocks away, visit the Coast Salish Living Mural, located in the alley alongside the soon-to-be home of Setting Sun Circle. From there, head to see the Centennial Pole outside the Whatcom County Courthouse and the Spindle Whorl Mural inside the Bellingham Public Library. At The Whatcom Museum, see the permanent galleries and story poles featuring the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe. Fuel up at the Indigenous-owned Turtle’s Cafe before heading over to see the Salmon Woman Pole at Maritime Heritage Park and the Double Thunderbird Pole at nearby Bellwether Plaza. There are a number of miles on pleasant bike lanes to the next stops: the “It’s Mine” Story Pole at the Bellingham International Airport and the ININYAX’A7N (Thunderbird) Sculpture at the Whatcom Community College. The Olympic Pipeline Memorial Pole outside Whatcom Falls is next on the route, followed by the House of Healing at the Sehome Arboretum. Enjoy the descent back into town, where you’ll visit six murals within close proximity: Salmon Run, Salmon Woman, Honoring the Salish Sea, and the three Indigeversal Collective Murals. You’ll return to Waypoint Park having gained a greater appreciation for the cultural, ancestral, environmental, and artistic influence of the Coast Salish.

Note: Salish Tribute Lite does not visit the “It’s Mine” Story Pole at the Airport, ININYAX’A7N (Thunderbird) at the Whatcom Community College, or the House of Healing at the Sehome Arboretum.

House of Tears / Totem Pole Journey

The House of Tears is a group of master carvers from the Lummi Nation, located just north of Bellingham. The group is internationally recognized for creating totem and story poles that serve as powerful expressions of healing, remembrance, and cultural continuity. Led by Master Carver Jewell Praying Wolf James, the House of Tears has spent decades carving “healing poles” that are carried on long-distance journeys to honor Indigenous resilience, mourn loss, and build relationships between communities. Each pole is carved in traditional Coast Salish style and gifted to communities in crisis or to places working to protect sacred lands and the environment. The journeys invite reflection, dialogue, and collective healing. Watch this 3-minute video featuring Master Carver Jewell James to learn more.

Noisy Waters Mural Festival

The Noisy Waters Mural Festival is a live mural competition held each August where world-class artists turn blank walls into public art. The festival hosts the Indigeversal Collective, a collaborative mural installation led and produced by First Nation Artists from across North America.
